Abbath, the so-called ‘Lemmy of Black Metal,’ has released the third single from Dread Reaver, due out March 25th via Season of Mist. The new single, “The Book of Breath” is (of course) a banger; it is more straightforward than we’ve heard on “Dream Cull” and “Dread Reaver.” Abbath’s voice is distinct amongst all genres of Metal, the soaring guitar work through the middle of the track shows us that Abbath is more than fun-loving vocal content and lyrical genius!
The galloping riff pounds onward all the way through “The Book of Breath.” Abbath moves effortlessly up and down the scale, vocally, with high (and higher), but also with low, agony invoking intent. He even whispers his spell over us on this track. And in case we forgot, Abbath is an incredible guitarist, and the rest of the band are great at their craft/art. By design, Black Metal is the darkest of Metal, and “The Book of Breath” reminds us that Abbath reigns in the darkness; harnessing all of its horror and dread.
“They shall hear Hell roar! In flush of ember’s afterglow. Wash our filth away with ashes. Cauterize our weeping gashes. Inhale The Book of Breath.”
Abbath is also featured on the cover of Outburn Magazine this month, with wicked pics of the man, himself, along with a solid interview where, as usual, you get some really good insight and useful wisdom from the master of agony.
“I’m proud of who and what I represent. I may not always be proud of myself, but I’m proud of who I am.” – Abbath Doom Occulta
According to the three singles from the upcoming Dread Reaver, Abbath is continuing a lateral evolution; not just for the band, but for the genre as a whole. With the controversial strides that much of Black Metal has made in recent years (utilizing symphonics, improved sound quality, and harmonics, etc.), Abbath is adding what I would call ‘Blackened Thrash’ to the new offering. I am really looking forward to the release of this new record!
