Trying to pick my favorite bands can be a difficult task because they are, literally, always changing. If a band comes out with a new album, they will be my favorite band for a month or so. But there are some bands that will always be close to my heart. Thankfully, I’ve gotten to see all of them live at least once. Did your favorite band make the list?
IMPORTANT!!!! I play these bands (and many others) all the time during my set at WKNC. My set time is Friday nights from 10pm – 12am. Don’t be lame, check it out!

Attila
Okay, I know people are going to give me grief for this, but I don’t even care. This band has some great sing along and chants that just make you want to shout and get hyped. Not to mention that some of their songs are really heavy and have some great break downs. But this band made my list because their live show is just insane!!! Their stage presence and how they interact with the crowd is one of the best that I’ve seen. They are very interactive and there is never a dull moment when seeing them. They are also the chilliest and nicest guys. I met them on their “Lets Get Abducted” Tour and they gave me rolling papers. But if you ever have the chance to see this band, do it. I promise it will be a show you won’t forget. Also, if you like Attila, check out the band BROJOB. No need to explain myself.

Slaughter to Prevail
OH MY LORD, THIS IS THE HEAVIEST BAND I HAVE EVER HEARD!! DON’T FIGHT ME ON THIS! Since I got that out of my system, I can continue. This band is from Russia, and I just randomly found them on my “recommends” list on Spotify (shout out to Spotify for the good moves). This band has blast beats and breakdowns for days. Not to mention that the lead singer is a beast. I would say that they are more death metal than deathcore. But if you like Thy Art Is Murder, Rings of Saturn, Dying Fetus, Oceano, and Anglemaker, then this band is for you.

Wage War
Ahhhhh, this band has put out some bangers this past year. They are very metalcore, but they do it in a way that is just so cool. Briton’s voice is so clear and deep, and sounds amazing on record and live. I saw them at Warped Tour and I had no idea who they were, you better believe I started stalking and researching them religiously after I saw their set. They are a relatively new band that has been touring nonstop. If you have the chance to see them, DO IT! YOU WON’T REGRET IT! And if you love breakdowns and hearing a good “BLEIGH” during it, then this is your band.

Thy Art Is Murder
Holy crap this band is something else. CJ is like the ultimate front man. There is never a dull moment while he is on stage. I would say that he has the best and most distinguishable gutterals in all of Metal. And the drummer? OH MY GOD. Best drummer I’ve ever heard/seen. Their music is heavy as hell and always makes me want to break things (but in a good way). Though deathcore, their roots are definitely grounded in pure death metal.

Arch Enemy
Shout out to my dad for showing me this band. I used to listen to them when Angela was still the singer. I love the band with Alissa, she is my girl crush. This band is simply amazing. I get their songs stuck in my head all the time, and I’m not mad about it. If you like Amon Amarth (Arch Enemy is, also, melodic death metal), then I’m sure you will like this band. For my metalcore homies, they remind me of Parkway Drive. So, if you like Parkway Drive, you might like this band.

Amon Amarth
History and metal music, my two favorite things. These guys are masters of melodic death metal. As a twist, harmonizing is done by the guitarists. There is a very distinct sound, here. Amon Amarth makes me want to be a Viking and start raiding cities (if you don’t feel that way, then you are listening to Amon Amarth wrong). Johan’s voice is amazing and yes, he does sound like that live. Yeah, there are no bands that sound like them. They are one-of-a-kind.
- Favorite song: Guardians of Asgaard
- Origin: Tumba, Sweden

KoRn
KoRn was the first band that got me into metal. My parents played them all the time when I was little and all their songs are bangers. I love the emotion that Jonathon puts on every song, and the riffs and breakdowns are just perfect. They are considered to be “Nu Metal.” If you like a lot of heavy breakdowns, and random noises being sang into a microphone, this band is for you. Their new record, The Serenity of Suffering, has all of the best components of KoRn.

Upon A Burning Body
You know I gotta put my boys from Texas on here! Every song by Upon A Burning Body is an absolute banger. Seeing this band live is a must! Their energy on stage is great. These Pantera loving guys show their Texan pride on every album. Pantera is one of their biggest influences and you can hear it in the guitar riffs. All of their songs are very upbeat and will keep you on your feet. Hooks and anthems are the name of the game for these guys (“Everything is bigger in Texas”). They will not disappoint you, I promise.
- Favorite song: Carlito’s Way
- Origin: San Antonio, Texas

Whitechapel
Whitechapel is the first deathcore band that I fell in love with. These guys are so heavy and their songs make you want to bang your head or get in a moshpit. Their live show has the “in your face” attitude and it’s so great. Phil’s voice is literally heaven and I have no idea how he does his growls live; they are insane. His gutterals and screams are very impressive and really complete the sound of the band. They are a deathcore band and their sound is similar to Carnifex and Oceano. This band has a very special place in my heart. I got my DJ name from them: The Saw, because everyone knows, “where we come from, the saw is the law.”
- Favorite song: Elitist Ones or The Saw is the Law

Miss May I
This band is the band that got me into metalcore. They are the reason that I got into metal as heavily as I did. My brothers used to play their music all the time, so I’ve been rolling with these boys for a long time. Because of Miss May I, my music taste got heavier. They put on a great live show and they are also the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Also, I repsect anyone with nice hair, and Levi has some really nice hair 10/10. The band is metalcore, and they have the components of a metalcore band, but they do it in a way that is still really heavy. They remind me of As I Lay Dying in a way. Levi’s growls and Ryan’s clean vocals go well together and it gives them a really good sound.
- Favorite song: Deathless
- Origin: Troy, Ohio
Oh yeah, that picture at the top of this page is of me and Levi Benton (the lead singer). Didn’t I tell you that he had nice hair? Am I right, or am I right?
