Scrawl from The Saw’s Butcher Shop: Abbath — Dream Cull (2022) SINGLE REVIEW

Welcome to The Saw’s Butcher Shop! I am your host, your Master Butcher, The Saw. And I just wanted to stop by to make sure you knew that Abbath have just released a new single and video, “Dream Cull.” The single is off their new album, Dread Reaver, due for a March 25, 2022 release through Season of Mist.

I featured Abbath a couple years ago in a Band of Week scrawl. You can read that feature for some history and context on Abbath (the person, and the band).

I also got to see Abbath (with Obituary) in October of 2019, in Raleigh, NC. What a fantastic show! Abbath (the band) was crushing! Abbath (the man) reminds me of a much darker, more menacing Gene Simmons (KISS) on stage. Side note: Abbath was so good, that only Obituary could have followed them up on stage! And they did!

So, the single, “Dream Cull,” is a sample of Abbath’s mastery of Black Metal style infused with old school Thrash content and substance. The song gives me serious Lemmy (Motorhead) vibes. Drums drive the tune, while Abbath’s patented vocal style – a dry rasp; crystal clear annunciation – leads the listener down the slopes of death. Of course, the stringed instruments are a wicked, melodic spin on classic Metal.

The video for “Dream Cull” is video evidence of Abbath (the man) doing what he does! Ever the entertainer, always the showman, and forever a dark force in the weaving of nightmares.

I’m excited for Abbath’s new record, Dread Reaver, in March! The Saw will scratch out a Scrawl of that album the first of April!

Stay Metal,

THE SAW
