Welcome to The Saw’s Butcher Shop! Ya Girl is here to warn you that Suffocation have dropped a new song (and video) from their upcoming new album, Hymns from the Apocrypha (Nuclear Blast). The new track, “Seraphim Enslavement,” is devastating and pummeling Technical Death Metal – exactly what we’d expect from this powerhouse from the ages. But (if you can imagine), it is even darker and more brutal than ever!
Hymns from the Apocrypha is the first release featuring Ricky Meyers (vocals). His vocal delivery is an extreme, brimstone gurgling, and gravely, deep register gutteral (of course!). Frank Mullen (founder, former-vocalist) hand-picked Meyers for the job, so you already know that he is monstrous! The rest of the band proceed to execute the math metal with devastating accuracy (clearly heard in the first single, “Seraphim Enslavement”) – incredible time changes, crushing riffs, spiraling leads, and insane bursts of speed and blast-beats off-set by slower, churning, grinding breakdowns. And there are some new elements in the new single; new for Suffocation, anyway. The band is no stranger to harmony, but it plays a larger role, here. Blackened fast tremolo picking used as fillers layered behind and within the main, crunchy riffs is unexpected, but insanely beautiful. It gives even more depth to Suffocation’s deep cavernous sound – sonically, “Seraphim Enslavement” is a massively thick song!
Suffocation are entering their 35th year by releasing their 11th full-length studio album – Hymns from the Apocrypha – due to be released on November 3, 2023, and by announcing a world tour, which begins in Europe in 2024 with support from Sanguisugabogg, Enterprise Earth, and Organectomy. Ya Girl got to see Suffocation (finally!) this year, and it was… suffocating; they, literally, beat the breath out of you! Suffocation’s live shows are incredible! And you already know that I love these supporting acts, as well!
Check out the new single from Suffocation, “Seraphim Enslavement,” and lay your eyes on the new video released with it.
Stay Metal,
THE SAW
