Scrawl from The Saw’s Butcher Shop: Dying Fetus — Make Them Beg for Death (2023) ALBUM REVIEW

Welcome to The Saw’s Butcher Shop! Your Master Butcher – The Saw – is here, today, to talk about one of her favorite bands, and that band’s brand-new album. On September 8, 2023, Dying Fetus released their 11th studio album, Make Them Beg for Death (Relapse). Butcher Crew! Of course, this record curb-stomps you into the ground, but to what degree the beat-down is happening is amazing. 10 tracks in 37 minutes – trimmed-down, slam riffs, blinding speed, intense grooves, dual gutterals, insane drumming, all from three dudes!

If you are familiar with Dying Fetus, then Make Them Beg for Death contains no surprises. If you are not, then hold on to your head (by the neck)! This new album is – as usual – concise and dizzyingly exact. Crushing riffs are interrupted only by spiraling, cork-screwing leads, and snap-neck breakdowns and slam riffs. Technical brutality and speed bleed together with sickening time changes and tag-team gutterals.

Dying Fetus always hold a clinic on how, exactly, to execute technical Death Metal. Their version contains elements of Grind/Core, brutally blended with such technical accuracy – stop/start time stamps, and enough riffs to pack a careers worth into one album. The other thing about Dying Fetus (especially expressed in this new album) is the brilliant instrumentation of its members. Gallagher (vocals, guitars), Beasley (vocals, bass), and Williams (drums) are experts at their crafts. Really, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Make Them Beg for Death is a fine specimen; a great example of how you do this style of Extreme Metal, to perfection. You should already know that the singles – Compulsion for Cruelty, Feast of Ashes, and Unbridled Fury – are complete beat-downs! The way Dying Fetus weave together the madness is exquisite, and each single is an example what this album (and Dying Fetus) is all about. “Throw Them in the Van” is an old school nod to the band’s early days. It is a 1:41 track; a retro ass-whoopin’, tongue-n-cheek throwback. The other six tracks – “Enlighten Through Agony,” “When the Trend Ends,” “Undulating Carnage,” “Raised in Victory/Razed in Defeat,” “Hero’s Grave,” and “Subterfuge” – are just perfect displays of how Dying Fetus are expert masters of their craft.

Ya Girl also suggests that you try very hard to pay attention to the lyrical content. Dying Fetus lyrics are always brutally hyperbolic, but they (almost) always paint a vivid picture, a commentary, on the canvas of world events. And know that Dying Fetus don’t take themselves too seriously, but they are (seriously) some of the best musicians and song writers on the scene. Have I mentioned that I love this band?! Of course, I have! And I love this new album, too!

Rating: 10/10!! Come on! If you don’t know why, you’re not paying attention!

Favorite Songs: Really? How can I choose? Every song, equally, kicks ass! See. List. Above!

Be sure to go see the trio in a city near you starting next month!
