Welcome to The Saw’s Butcher Shop! It’s Your Master Butcher! And as I look around at all my torture devises, everything is covered in a thick layer of ice! That’s because the masters of new school Death Metal, Frozen Soul, have dropped a new single, “Morbid Effigy” – the leading single from their upcoming new full-length album, Glacial Domination, due to be released on May 19, 2023 (Century Media). This song is heavy! And if it’s not nasty enough, it features John Gallagher (Dying Fetus) with some guest vocals!

You already know how I feel about new school Death Metal. Frozen Soul are one of the pioneering originators of the genre. Their debut full-length album, 2021s, Crypt of Ice, was a masterpiece. Their live performance is an incredible display of old school stage presence executed perfectly, today. And, judging from their new single, “Morbid Effigy,” Frozen Soul will continue to dominate, encased in a thick layer of ice.

“Morbid Effigy” is a nasty, groove-laden crusher! Frozen Soul have mastered the balance between slow, crunchy doom and fast chunky beat-downs. They are a fantastic band on their own, but on this new song John Gallagher delivers some intense gutterals, Dying Fetus style; adding to the tuned-down ice age onslaught.

The song begins with an eerie track, straight from a horror flick, then crushes you under the weight of a slow, deliberate and heavy riff. Great vocal delivery is another hook for Frozen Soul. The song takes off with a wicked, mid-paced riff and pounding snare, before breaking-down into a seriously heavy groove. And just when you think it couldn’t get any heavier, or slower, the time signature changes again and crushes you to dust. With a slight increase in pace, Gallagher finishes you off with his insane delivery.
