Scrawl from The Saw’s Butcher Shop: My Favorite Albums of 2023 (so far)

through 2023, and many of our favorite artists have released new albums that have kicked our asses. As we have discussed, coming out of the events of 2020/21, a lot of bands have dropped some of their best work; while new(er) bands have slapped us with bangers out of the gates. The last two years have proven that, in spite of world events, Metal cannot be stopped nor, otherwise, held down! Ya Girl just wants to remind you of some of these killer records from this year, as I look forward to my AOTY for 2023.

Here are some of my favorites – from OGs and newcomers, alike. I am listing the albums in chronological order according to release dates:

1/13/2023 – As 2023 was just getting started – Friday the 13th, to be exact – the Death Metal OGs, Obituary, dropped their 11th studio album, Dying of Everything. Check out The Saw’s New Album Review

1/20/2023 – One of the up-and-coming New School Death Metal acts, Re-buried, released their debut album, Repulsive Nature, upon our unsuspecting heads. Ya Girl reviewed this crushing opening salvo!

2/3/2023 – NSDM continues its rule with the release of Homicidal Ecstasy from Sanguisugabogg. As I mentioned in my New Album Review, this release continues to prove that this band is the Cannibal Corpse of my generation!

3/10/2023 – In a return to dominance, Remember… You Must Die, from Old School DeathCore kings, Suicide Silence, dropped; reminding us that they invented this brand of Metal. Here’s the Album Review!

5/12/2023 – The brilliant Death-Grind geniuses, Cattle Decapitation, continued to beat us senseless with the release of Terrasite. I love this band! And I cover their unique expression in my Review of this beast!

5/19/2023 – Frozen Soul continue to show us why they are on top of the NSDM heap with their sophomore release, Glacial Domination. This is ice cold Death Metal! This Review was fun!

6/16/2023 – I swear, (IMO) these last two years have been (mostly) about NSDM! One of the pioneers of the subgenre, Creeping Death, released Boundless Domain and, as I noted, southern-fried groovy riffs are my favorite!

7/7/2023 – You already know that Black Metal must be represented this year, and newcomer, Blackbraid, is repping for real! Blackbraid II is brilliant; a beautiful expression of Black Metal agony and melancholy, this is a great record!

There have been a lot of great records released this year, already – including 72 Seasons from Metallica, Scorched by Overkill, a new live album from Cradle of Filth, War Against All by Immortal, and All Heads Are Gonna Roll from Vomitory – and you can catch Ya Girl’s Reviews of all of these New Albums (and much more!).

And the second-half of the year promises to be just as exciting with new releases from OGs Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Cryptopsy, Dying Wish, Thy Art Is Murder, and many more! What a time to be alive! I’m excited!

Stay Metal,

THE SAW
