Welcome to The Saw’s Butcher Shop! It’s Your Master Butcher, The Saw! Metallica have released the fourth single off their upcoming new album, 72 Seasons. They have dropped the title track on us – it is 7:39 of Thrash-grooved, solo-ripped, soaring chorus soaked, Metallica. “72 Seasons” refers to the first 18 years of a person’s life.
“72 Seasons” builds into the fastest track we’ve heard yet from the new album. Classic riffs materialize out of the intro, settling into the main riff. Ulrich’s (drums) trademark, unique style drives this song through the roller-coaster ride of time changes and multiple riffs. The track builds to the big chorus of ‘Wrath of Man…’ ’72 Seasons gone’. A couple Hammett (lead guitar) solos fill in the layers over the main riff. The bridge slows the pace and gives the song a darker feel, which sets-up the quick-tempo chorus. Hetfield’s vocals are slightly lower (for the most-part) than his modern delivery, accentuated by the big chorus lines.
For Ya Girl, as usual, it’s the Hetfield Riffs that set this song off! So far, I think the difference in this new album from the last few Metallica releases is found in the composition of the tracks. The songs feel very natural and organic. With the title track, I like the build-up – 52 seconds to hit full speed. Then, hold on tight for the ride!
The official video for “72 Seasons” has had 1.9 million views in the first 24 hours.
The new album from Metallica, 72 Seasons (Blackened Recordings), is due out on April 14, 2023. A groundbreaking “No Repeat Weekend” world tour, that spans a couple years, kicks-off soon. And don’t forget about the cinematic pre-release showing of the entire album, with band interviews and video footage on April 13 at a theater near you!
